JLPT N5 kanji list

The JLPT N5 is the first level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. These are the 104 kanji commonly taught for it, grouped into 13 small themed sets. Each one links to a page with its readings, stroke order, example words and a story to remember it by.

Learn them free with spaced repetition

The JLPT has not published official kanji lists since 2010. This list is the former level 4 list (103 kanji) plus 田, which many N5 courses include. Romaji are written the way you type them in the app (juu, not jū). For the two kinds of reading, see on'yomi and kun'yomi.

Frequently asked questions

How many kanji are in JLPT N5?

There is no official list, and courses differ. This one has 104: the former level 4 list plus 田.

Do I need to write kanji for the JLPT?

No. The JLPT tests reading and listening with multiple-choice questions; there is no handwriting. Writing still helps you remember the shapes.

How long does it take to learn the N5 kanji?

At 5 new kanji a day, a first pass through all 104 takes about three weeks. Reviews then keep them fresh.

Why does each kanji have several readings?

Most kanji have an on'yomi (from Chinese) and a kun'yomi (a Japanese word). Which one you use depends on the word.
