Terms of service
Terms of service for Moji Ninja, the free trainer for Japanese kana and JLPT N5 and N4 kanji.
Last updated: October 2026
1. Acceptance of these terms
By using Moji Ninja or creating an account, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
2. The service
Moji Ninja is a free, non-commercial tool for learning Japanese hiragana, katakana and kanji. We may change, pause or end any part of it at any time, and we do not promise that it will always be available.
3. Learning content
We prepare the learning content with care, but it may contain mistakes: in meanings, readings, romaji, translations, example words and sentences, stroke order or anything else. It is meant for learning and practice only. The stories that help you remember a kanji are memory aids, not its real history. Check anything important, such as for an exam, school work or a translation, with a teacher or a good dictionary.
4. The JLPT
The organisers of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) have not published official kanji lists since the test changed in 2010. Moji Ninja's N5 and N4 sets follow the commonly used lists, which are based on the earlier test, so the real test may include kanji that are not in them. Moji Ninja is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Japan Foundation or Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), which run the JLPT, and it does not promise any exam result.
5. Content from other sources
Some of the content comes from free projects: dictionary data from JMdict and KANJIDIC2 (EDRDG), example sentences written by volunteers for the Tatoeba project, and stroke-order diagrams from KanjiVG. That content keeps its own licences, listed under "Licences & attributions" on the About page; Moji Ninja's own code is under the MIT licence. We filter what we show so that it suits young learners too, but something wrong or unsuitable may still slip through. We correct or remove such content as soon as we learn of it.
6. Accounts
You can create an account to sync your progress and notes between devices. Choose a username that does not reveal who you are, and keep your password safe: you are responsible for what is done with your account. If you are under 16, ask a parent or guardian before you create an account. We may remove accounts that break these terms.
7. Your notes
The kanji stories and memory hooks you write are yours. When you sign in, you allow us to store them and send them to your devices, only so that sync works. Other users cannot see them. Do not put anything illegal, or anyone's personal details, in them; we may delete notes that break these terms.
8. Acceptable use
Do not misuse Moji Ninja: no attempts to get into other people's accounts or the server, no automated scripts that overload it, and no use that breaks the law.
9. No warranty
To the extent the law allows, Moji Ninja is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that its content is complete or correct, or that your data will never be lost.
10. Liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage that comes from using Moji Ninja or relying on its content, including lost progress. Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for intent or gross negligence, or takes away your rights as a consumer.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and using the service after a change means you accept the new terms. If any part of these terms turns out to be invalid, the rest still applies.
